Key home & construction formulas

Construction Costtotal = area × rate + fees + contingency
House Construction Costcost = area × storeys × rate + fit-out + contingency
Room Areafloor = l × w · walls = perimeter × height − openings
Square Footagearea = length × width × rooms × (1 + waste)
Flooringpacks = area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per pack
Paintlitres = area × coats ÷ coverage per litre
Tiletiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint))
Brickbricks = wall area ÷ (brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)
ConcreteVolume = length × width × depth (× π/4 × d² for round)
Cementcement = dry volume × (cement parts ÷ total parts) × 1440 kg/m³

Home & Construction questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Allow 8% for a straight layout, 12% for diagonal and up to 17% for herringbone, plus one spare pack for later repairs.
