Key concrete & masonry formulas

ConcreteVolume = length × width × depth (× π/4 × d² for round)
Concrete SlabVolume = area × thickness × (1 + waste)
Concrete FootingVolume = length × width × depth × number of footings
Concrete ColumnVolume = cross-sectional area × height × number of columns
Concrete WallVolume = (length × height − openings) × thickness
Cementcement = dry volume × (cement parts ÷ total parts) × 1440 kg/m³
SandVolume = area × depth · tonnes = volume × density ÷ 1000
Aggregateaggregate volume = dry volume × aggregate parts ÷ total parts
Concrete Mix Ratiodry volume = wet × 1.54, then split by the ratio parts
Brickbricks = wall area ÷ (brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)

Concrete & Masonry questions

How many bags of cement in 1 m³ of concrete?

For a 1:1.5:3 (M20) mix, roughly 8 bags of 50 kg cement per cubic metre, plus 0.42 m³ sand and 0.84 m³ aggregate.

Why multiply by 1.54?

Dry materials lose volume when water fills the voids between particles. The 1.54 factor converts the wet volume you need into the dry materials to buy.

How many bricks per square metre?

Standard UK bricks at a 10 mm joint give 60 bricks per m² for a single skin, or 120 for a one-brick wall.
