About the Ideal Gas Law Calculator

The ideal gas law ties together the four state variables of a gas: pressure, volume, amount and temperature. PV = nRT works well for real gases at ordinary pressures and above their boiling points. Choose the unknown, enter the other three and the calculator solves it, reporting the result in several common units.

Also known as: pv = nrt, gas law calculator, ideal gas equation, gas constant calculator.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter solve for and the other fields.
  2. The result updates instantly as you type — press Calculate (or Enter) at any time.
  3. Review the breakdown shown under the main result.

Formula

PV = nRT, R = 8.314 J/(mol·K)

Worked example

Using the values pre-filled in the calculator above:

  • Solve for: Pressure
  • Volume = 0.0224 m³
  • Moles = 1 mol
  • Temperature = 273.15 K

the calculator returns:

  • Pressure: 101,388.19 Pa
  • In bar: 1.01388
  • In atm: 1.00062
  • In psi: 14.7051

Frequently asked questions

Which units must I use?

Pascals, cubic metres, moles and kelvin with R = 8.314. If you prefer atm and litres, use R = 0.08206 instead.

When does the ideal gas law fail?

At very high pressures or near the condensation point, where molecular volume and attraction matter. Use the van der Waals equation there.
