Use it for growth rates and ratios, such as average investment returns over several years, because those values multiply rather than add.

When is the harmonic mean useful?

For averaging rates like speeds over the same distance. Driving 60 km/h one way and 40 km/h back gives an average speed of 48 km/h (the harmonic mean), not 50.
