Formula

n = p₁^a₁ × p₂^a₂ × … × pₖ^aₖ

Worked example

Using the values pre-filled in the calculator above:

  • Whole number: 360

the calculator returns:

  • Prime factorization: 2^3 × 3^2 × 5
  • Expanded: 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5
  • Distinct primes: 3
  • Number of divisors: 24

Working

  1. 360 ÷ 2 = 180
  2. 180 ÷ 2 = 90
  3. 90 ÷ 2 = 45
  4. 45 ÷ 3 = 15
  5. 15 ÷ 3 = 5
  6. 5 ÷ 5 = 1

Frequently asked questions

How do you find prime factors?

Divide by the smallest prime (2) as many times as possible, then 3, 5, 7 and so on until the quotient is 1. 360 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5 = 2³ × 3² × 5.
