About the Coffee Ratio Calculator

Brew ratio is the weight of coffee to the weight of water, and it is the single biggest lever on strength. Most filter methods sit between 1:15 and 1:17. Ground coffee holds back about twice its weight in water, which is why your brewed yield is always less than the water you poured.

Also known as: coffee to water ratio, brew ratio calculator, pour over calculator, french press ratio, coffee grams calculator.

Worked example

Using the values pre-filled in the calculator above:

  • Method: Pour over / V60 (1:16)
  • I know the: Number of cups
  • Cups = 2
  • Cup size = 250 ml

the calculator returns:

  • Coffee: 35.5 g
  • Water: 568 g
  • Brew ratio: 1 : 16
  • Brewed coffee yield: 497 ml

Frequently asked questions

What is the golden ratio for coffee?

Around 1:16 — 60 g of coffee per litre of water. Move towards 1:14 for a stronger cup or 1:18 for a lighter one.

Why is my brewed volume less than the water I used?

Wet grounds retain roughly twice their dry weight in water, so 30 g of coffee keeps about 60 ml.
